Dorothy represents each one of us. Her dilemma is how to find the way back home to Kansas. (the ideal) She is given advice by her conscience (Glenda the good witch) to follow the Yellow Brick Road (the road of restoration) which will lead her to the Wizard of Oz (The Messiah). She is told that ONLY HIM can help her get back to Kansas.

On her journey she enlists the help of Scarecrow (mind), Tinman (heart), and Lion (courage/will). The Yellow Brick Road of Restoration is full of many dangers, and the wicked witch (Satan) is determined to stop Dorothy from reaching her destination.

When Dorothy finally meets the Wizard he is a larger than life, smoke and fire breathing image projected on a screen. He's subjective and intimidating. He also surprised them with request to go to Munchkinland and directly confront the wicked witch (Satan). But, after all this ordeals, when Toto pulls back the curtain and exposes the real Wizard, Dorothy is amazed and disappointed to discover that he is not what she had thought him to be. As it turns out, the real Wizard isn't really so "great and powerful" after all.

The Wizard then gives her companions some astonishing advice. He bestows symbolic blessings onto the trio. He convinces the Scarecrow that he already possesses a great mind and therefore gives him a diploma. The Tinman receives a huge symbolic heart and sheds tears, revealing the emotion already alive within him. The Cowardly Lion is awarded a medal of valor for acts of courage performed on the road to Oz, thereby regaining his lost self confidence as king of the jungle.

In the end her conscience (Glenda the good witch) tells Dorothy that she alone has the power within to find her way back to Kansas. It was there all the time. Dorothy discovers that she is now and always was her own messiah.

I see this story as a parable for religious life. What it tells me is that in our own journey to the ideal, what we ultimately discover is that we are our own messiahs. It's there within us; we just have to discover it. We look for God through Jesus Christ and other sacred persons. In one way or another, any religious search represents the human effort to restore the image of God within ourselves; it is the search for our true identity. There is no wizard or messiah that can take us somewhere over the rainbow and back to Kansas. He can't give us wisdom, heart, or courage. He can share from his experience and point out the way, but we must discover and cultivate those things ourselves if we want to get anywhere.

You and I are a lot like Dorothy. When the curtain is pulled back and we see “The Wizard” as someone different than what we thought him to be, how will we react?

When all of us find "God within" we will have discovered what Dorothy has at the end of her journey, that she was her own messiah all along. When one feels "deceived" and starts believing that it was all for nothing, one may lose or even reject all that was learned along the way. Therefore the attitude at the end "when the curtain is pulled" makes or breaks the experience, doesn't it?

This presents us with our own dilemma. We can see the Wizard as someone who tricked us into taking a detour through Munchkinland, or appreciate him for what examples of wisdom, heart and courage he has shown us on the journey back to Kansas.

Recuperation of our original value

The messiah is necessary and central in the process of restoration, as the Judeo-Christian tradition imply, also we cannot avoid the historic and personal “Yellow Brick Road” of Restoration, but soon or later we need to awake to the final reality that we ourselves become-are TRUE SONS AND DAUTHERS OF GOD.

The messiah is like the coach, but not the final one: Which is our conscience and finally God.

Each person has sacred, cosmic and unique value and is endowed with irrevocable dignity; therefore, persons are not means but ends in themselves. Every victory the Messiah accomplishes for the providence and proclaims for himself and his family, are claims done as a representative of humanity and therefore done for each and every person as God's sons and daughters, all who need to restore THEIR ORIGINAL VALUE:

1.       Sacred value. We have intrinsic and inalienable dignity as God's sons and daughters.

2.       Cosmic value. As visible manifestations of the invisible Creator, we are microcosms of the macrocosm.

3.       Unique Value - Never will be another person exactly like each one of us. We are unique, unrepeatable and irreplaceable.

4.       Eternal value. We are eternal beings who will live forever in the spiritual world with God.

The fact that each person has these transcendent values is the basis of universal human rights and an ethical society.

Through the process of restoration, God seeks to fully manifest in every man and woman as part of the original plan. Each person symbolizes the earthly and spiritual worlds coming together in harmony. As persons that will restore the original ideal we are commission to mature, enter into an eternal relationship of true love through holy matrimony with the blessing of God, after which not only our children but our descendants for generations to come would live forevermore as God's self-embodiment, both male and female, inheriting God’s nature and attributes generation after generation. God is invisible and without form. God cannot be seen even when we enter into the spiritual world.

Once we are able to restore our original positions we will became the visible forms of God, God will dwelt in our hearts and reigned from within them over the corporeal, physical world and the incorporeal, spiritual world. In other words, God will govern all worlds from within human love, through each and every person. Together, we will create God's kingdom of peace and harmony at all levels. All seven billion people living in the world today would express the visible form and manifestation of God.

Additional note

In the religious path there is a potential risk to end up worshipping the “deification” of a person (Jesus, Mother Mary and the saints, as some Christians do) and not understand that they are examples to emulate, not "idols", which can lead to some form of idolatry.

Without any aspersions to our own religious history, it has been a fatal human trait to worship and make divine the experiences and lives of others, while, at the same time, completely missing our own inner divine life and profound connection with God.

Each person express and manifest singular and unique characteristics (Imago Dei) as God's sons and daughters, but God is not limited to a sole and unique particular human face or image or couple, even a perfected Adam and Eve, Jesus Christ or True Parents are still a limited and partial manifestation of the infinite totality of the mysterious nature of God's personality. No single human or couple could be ALL of God, the totality of God. Our "Eternal CREATOR" is the origin and source of all the different and multiple (present and future) "Individual Images" (using the Unification Thought expression) and the ONE who can guide us internally and constantly through our heart (original mind) and consciences. This is one among other reasons why is wrong to worship or deify any human being as God himself. No person or couple can claim a “monopoly on God” or a “monopoly of the truth”.

El Mago de Oz, aunque parece sólo un bonito cuento de aventuras para niños, es una gran metáfora o alegoría llena de profundidad y muy rica en simbolismo, que se puede interpretar y comprender en varios niveles. Dentro de nosotros mismos encontramos a cada uno de sus personajes.

Dorothy, como el personaje central está perdida debido a un tornado, (al igual que todos nosotros que estamos perdidos en este mundo debido a la caída y al pecado) y su dilema es como encontrar el camino de regreso a su hogar en Kansas (símbolo del mundo ideal que todos queremos alcanzar). Su conciencia está representada por Glenda - el hada buena- que le indica a Dorothy que deberá seguir el sendero pavimentado de amarillo (el camino de la salvación o restauración), que es el que le conduce al poderoso Mago de Oz, (el Mesías) pues solamente el Mago es quien le puede ayudar a regresar a su hogar.

En su búsqueda se encuentra con tres personajes bien diferentes entre si, que le ayudarán en su empresa, ellos son: el Espantapájaros, el hombre de Hojalata y el León. El Espantapájaros representa el intelecto o la razón, y se siente muy angustiado pues cree que no tiene cerebro ya que es todo de paja. El hombre de Hojalata, sufre mucho también porque cree que no tiene corazón y no puede sentir. Y finalmente está el León que aunque en apariencia simbolice el coraje, el valor y la voluntad, en realidad es un cobarde.

Todos ellos junto a Dorothy y Toto, un simpático perrito que es la mascota predilecta de la heroína de esta bella historia, transitarán por el sendero amarillo (la restauración), y deberán tomar decisiones difíciles y sortear muchos obstáculos que la bruja mala (Satanás o el mal) interpondrá en su camino para que no logren su destino.

Dorothy tiene convicción en su propósito y desea con todo el corazón regresar al hogar; y para ello tiene que dar con el misterioso Mago de Oz, a quién encuentra finalmente luego de un sin fin de peripecias. Cuando Dorothy y sus acompañantes se encuentran con el famoso Mago de Oz, quedan desconcertados ante la presencia de alguien poderoso, autoritario, que intimida con una voz de trueno, en medio de lenguas de fuego y humo entre las que aparece el imponente Mago, que no parece un ser de este mundo.

Pero he aquí que Toto - el travieso perrito de Dorothy- descorre el telón, quedando al descubierto la realidad de un elaborado montaje creado para dar una imagen de gran poder, misterio y autoridad. El verdadero Mago de Oz no es más que un ser humano mortal como cualquier otro, y lo demás era una impresionante coreografía para crear una imagen de grandeza y expectativa dirigida a todos aquellos que recorren el camino para llegar hasta él. Esto decepciona un poco a Dorothy, porque descubre que no es tan grande, ni poderoso y que además sufre, y le entra la duda de que quizá después de tantos esfuerzos por encontrarlo no sea capaz de ayudarle. Pero todo cambia al instante, porque el Mago de Oz les da a todos unos consejos conmovedores y ellos quedan maravillados de su amor, bondad y sabiduría. También les concede una serie de bendiciones.

Al Espantapájaros le da un diploma donde consta que posee un gran intelecto. Al hombre de Hojalata le da un corazón y éste de tanta emoción, llora, demostrando así sus profundos sentimientos. Y al cobarde León le da una medalla al valor, por proteger con mucha valentía a Dorothy y los demás amigos de los peligros durante el camino.

Al final, su conciencia (Glenda - el hada buena), le revela a Dorothy que ella recorrió el sendero amarillo, porque el verdadero poder estaba siempre dentro de sí misma y entonces del mismo modo hallará el camino de regreso a su casa en Kansas. Dorothy descubre el valor que ella realmente tiene y recupera así su verdadera identidad y confianza en si misma.

Vemos esta preciosa historia como un arquetipo de la vida religiosa, que nos muestra el fuerte deseo por encontrar el ideal, así como el camino necesario que tenemos que recorrer para finalmente lograrlo. Se ha buscado a Dios a través de Jesucristo y otros hombres santos. De una u otra forma, cualquier búsqueda religiosa, representa el esfuerzo humano por restaurar la imagen de Dios dentro de nosotros mismos y recuperar nuestra verdadera identidad. También nos ayuda a comprender el papel del Mesías como el catalizador que nos ayuda a descubrir nuestro propio valor original que siempre está dentro de nosotros mismos, y es allí donde lo hallaremos. No es un Mago increíble, que vendrá milagrosamente sobre las nubes anunciado por grandes voces, ni nos llevará a nuestro hogar por encima de un arco iris como Dorothy esperaba. El no puede infundirnos mágicamente la sabiduría, el corazón o el valor. Pero si puede compartir su amor, experiencia y sabiduría con nosotros, al señalarnos y ayudarnos a recorrer el mismo camino que él ya ha recorrido antes que nosotros. Sin embargo, al final, somos nosotros mismos los que debemos descubrir las condiciones y ser responsables de cultivar el corazón, la sabiduría y la voluntad, si realmente queremos llegar a donde también él ha llegado.

Tu y yo somos como Dorothy, cuando la cortina cae y vemos al Mesías en su dimensión real: ¿Cómo reaccionamos? Ese es el dilema. Podemos sentirnos decepcionados y ver al Mago como un embaucador que nos ha usado y manipulado a su antojo llevándonos por un camino mucho más difícil del que buscábamos, o por el contrario, sabremos apreciarlo y valorarlo verdaderamente por su amor, su corazón, sus sabios ejemplos, ayuda y sacrificio. Este último es, en mi opinión, el mejor modo de aprender el camino de regreso a nuestro verdadero hogar. (El mundo ideal o el Reino de los Cielos. Kansas, para Dorothy)

Recuperar nuestro valor original

Cada persona es una realidad inabarcable, incognoscible, irrepetible, insustituible, única y con una dignidad irrenunciable; por eso las personas no son un medio, son un fin en sí mismas. TODAS las victorias que el Mesías alcanza en la providencia y que luego proclama y reclama para sí mismo y su familia, las reclama en último término como representante de la humanidad para todos y cada uno de nosotros, quienes como hijos e hijas de Dios necesitamos restaurar NUESTRO VALOR ORIGINAL:

1. Un valor divino. Tenemos la dignidad intrínseca e inalienable de ser hijos e hijas de Dios.
2. Un valor eterno. Somos seres eternos que viviremos para siempre en el mundo espiritual con Dios.
3. Un valor único. No hubo, no hay y no habrá nunca alguien igual a cada uno de nosotros. Somos únicos, irrepetibles e irremplazables.
4. Un valor cósmico. Somos la manifestación visible del creador invisible, imagen y semejanza de Dios. Somos un microcosmos del macrocosmos.

Cada persona, por tanto es portadora de todos estos valores transcendentes y esto constituye el fundamento de la dignidad y de los Derechos Humanos Universales. Por su dignidad intrínseca cada persona es la que “decide” su propia vida; no el Estado, ni el Gobierno, ni las mayorías y no está al servicio de las estructuras, sino que son éstas las que están a su servicio.

Por medio del proceso de la restauración, Dios busca manifestarse completamente en cada hombre y mujer como parte del plan original. Las personas simbolizan el mundo espiritual y mundo físico puestos juntos en armonía. Como personas que restauraremos el ideal original tenemos la misión de madurar y establecer una relación eterna de amor verdadero por medio de un matrimonio sagrado con la bendición de Dios, después del cual nuestros futuros descendientes por generaciones vivirían siempre como la auto-encarnación de Dios, ambos varón y mujer, heredando la naturaleza y atributos de Dios generación tras generación. Dios es invisible y sin forma. Dios no puede ser visto incluso cuando entramos en el mundo espiritual.

Una vez que logramos restaurar nuestras posiciones originales nos convertiremos en las formas visibles de Dios, Dios morará en nuestros corazones y reinará desde nuestro interior sobre todo lo externo, el mundo físico y el mundo espiritual. En otras palabras, Dios gobernará todos los mundos desde el interior del amor humano, por medio de todas las personas. Juntos crearemos el reino de paz y armonía de Dios en todos los niveles. Todos, los más de siete mil millones de personas que vivimos hoy llegarán a expresar la forma visible y la manifestación de Dios.
